How to remove GPS location from a photo — and what stripping it can't hide.

Most photos carry an invisible second file: where you stood, when you stood there, and what you were holding. Removing it takes about ten seconds. Knowing what removal does not cover takes one more minute, and matters more.

What is actually inside a photo

Every time a phone or camera saves an image it writes a block of technical notes into the file alongside the pixels. The format is called EXIF, and it was invented for photographers — so you could look at a shot six months later and know which lens and shutter speed produced it. It works exactly as designed. The problem is that phones added a field the format's authors could not have anticipated the consequences of: your coordinates.

Drop a photo on Metadata Viewer & Remover and you will typically see:

  • Make and Model — the exact device. Not "a phone", but which one.
  • Date and time taken — to the second, usually including the original time zone offset.
  • GPS latitude and longitude — often to within a few metres. The tool shows a notice when a photo has them, because this is the field people don't expect.
  • Exposure settings — ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length, lens model.
  • Software — what edited the file last, which quietly reveals your workflow.

None of it is visible when you look at the picture. All of it travels with the file.

Why the location field is the one that matters

Camera settings leaking is an annoyance. Coordinates are a different category, because of where ordinary photos get taken: at home, at your child's school gate, outside the office, at the clinic, in the hotel you are staying in this week.

A single photo is rarely the issue. A handful is. Sell a desk on a marketplace and the buyer has your street. Post a series of pictures of a pet over a year and the cluster of coordinates draws a map of your life with your front door in the middle. Photograph a document at your kitchen table and send it to a stranger for a rental application, and you have attached your address to a form you were careful not to write it on.

Step by step

  1. Open Metadata Viewer & Remover and drop your photo on the dropzone. JPG, PNG, HEIC and TIFF are all accepted; JPG is where EXIF is richest.
  2. Read the table before you strip anything. It is worth seeing what your camera has been recording — the first time is usually a surprise, and it tells you whether the setting is worth turning off at the source.
  3. Press Remove all metadata & download clean copy. The image is redrawn from its pixels alone and re-encoded with nothing attached.
  4. Download the clean copy. It arrives with -clean added to the filename, so the original is never overwritten.
  5. Verify it. Drop the clean file back onto the same tool. The table should now report that no metadata was found. Trusting a privacy step you have not checked once is the wrong habit; checking it once is enough.

What "removing metadata" really does to the file

This is the part most guides skip, and it changes how you should use the tool.

The photo is not edited in place. It is drawn onto a blank canvas and saved out again from the pixels — so the metadata isn't deleted so much as never carried across. That approach is thorough, and it has three consequences worth knowing:

  • Everything goes, not just the coordinates. Copyright and creator fields, captions, keywords, the capture date, the colour profile. If you are a photographer who wants to keep your byline and lose only the location, this tool is the wrong shape for that job — it is deliberately all-or-nothing.
  • A JPG is re-encoded, so it is a second-generation copy. The quality is set high and the difference is invisible in normal viewing, but it is a re-compression. Strip the copy you are about to share, not your archive original. That is good practice regardless of the tool.
  • PNG comes back as PNG; everything else comes back as JPG. A HEIC or TIFF file you clean will download as a .jpg. That is usually what you wanted anyway if you are sending it to someone — but it is a format change, not just a metadata change, so don't be surprised by the extension.

One photo at a time, by design. It is a read-then-decide tool rather than a conveyor belt, because the reading half is the half people actually need.

Three things stripping metadata will not hide

Metadata is the invisible layer. It is not the only layer, and treating a stripped file as anonymous is the mistake this section exists to prevent.

1. Whatever is visible in the frame

A house number on a door. A street sign reflected in a window. The view from your balcony, which is unique. A school uniform crest. A delivery label on a box in the corner. A name badge. Removing coordinates from the file does nothing about any of it, and people are far better at reading a photograph than they are at reading EXIF. Look at the picture before you look at its metadata.

2. The filename

Files carry names, and names carry information — a client's surname, a project codename, a date, sometimes a full address typed in when the file was saved. The clean copy keeps your original name with -clean appended, so if the name says something, rename the file before you send it.

3. Copies you have already sent

Cleaning a file today does nothing to the version that went out last month, or to the copy sitting in someone's message thread, or the one already indexed by a marketplace. Stripping metadata is a habit that protects future sends. It is not a recall.

"Doesn't the app strip it for me?"

Sometimes. And the inconsistency is exactly why it is a poor thing to rely on.

Large social platforms generally re-encode what you upload, which removes EXIF as a side effect of their own processing. That covers the case people worry about most, and it is why the risk feels theoretical. But it does not cover the ways files most often actually move:

  • Email attachments — sent through untouched.
  • Chat apps sending "as a file" or "as a document" — the option that preserves quality preserves the metadata with it.
  • Cloud storage links — the recipient downloads your original bytes.
  • Marketplace and classified listings — behaviour varies by site, and you cannot check from the outside.
  • Direct transfers between devices — the whole point is that the file arrives intact.

The rule that survives all of this: if the recipient gets the file rather than a re-encoded copy of the picture, assume the metadata went with it.

Better still: stop recording it

Stripping is a cure. The prevention is a setting, and it takes longer to find than to change.

On iPhone, location access for the camera lives under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera; setting it to Never stops new photos carrying coordinates. There is also a per-share control: in the share sheet, tap Options at the top and turn off Location before sending. On Android the equivalent is inside the camera app's own settings, usually named Location tags, Save location or Geotagging.

Turning it off costs you the ability to browse your library by map, which some people genuinely use. If you do, leave it on and clean the individual photos you share — that is the trade this tool exists to make cheap.
