Off, each range becomes its own file (several ranges arrive as a ZIP). On, 1-3, 8-10 gives you a single six-page PDF in the original page order, with any overlap removed.
Turns the box above into a delete list: everything you name is dropped and you get one PDF of what's left. Combining is required for this, so it switches itself on.
For splitting one long document into even parts — a 100-page report becomes ten 10-page PDFs instead of a hundred single pages. The last file holds whatever is left over.
